Late evening Tusker.jpg

This tusker was taken very late in the evening. We were the last one in the park and our guide let me go out with him and stalk this guy on foot. Taken with the EOS 10D, 500mm, f/4, ISO 800 and a very slow 1/3 sec shutter speed – cropped from landscape to portrait.

other sizes: small medium original auto

UPDATE 27 JANUARY 2007: The cross-tusker was shot and badly wounded by a home guard (as he is familiar with humans he had come too close to the bunker) near Panama (Kumana Bird Sanctuary). The Government dispatched a Wildlife Director with veterinarians by helicopter but that the tusker been shot at his knee and could not stand up. The SL Army made a metal cage to stand him up but he died a few days back. This is believed to be the last remaining Cross-Tusker in Sri Lanka - a huge tragedy and loss for Yala and Sri Lanka – and not the way for such a magnificent animal to go. Truly a sad day.
