A very short, one-day, visit to Butrint and Saranda. Butrint is a world heritage site (one of 2 in Albania). It has been occupied since prehistoric times. Butrint has been the site of a Greek colony, a Roman city and a bishopric. The city was abandoned in the Middle Ages after marshes formed in the area, but before this had been ocupied by the Venetians and undergone a period of prosperity under a Byzantine administration. Now Butrint is a collection of archaeological ruins covering each period in the city’s past.
