The Blue Mountains is a landform which first took shape about 200 million years ago and has been
worn down quite a bit, compared with (say) the youngster 15 million year old Rockies. The area
could more accurately be described as plateau land broken by valleys. Curiously, residential
development around here took place along the escarpments while the valleys remain protected
natural wildlife habitats. They say that the sometimes intense BLUE colour is due to the refraction
of light passing through gum leaf eucalyptus emissions in the air. Aaaah! It was a beautiful
morning for a walk, this day.

I've seen how hard it is to get in and out of the valleys at some of the old mining sites up there; doesn't surprise me that they stuck to the escarpments when possible.
This is the best time to shoot; later in the day with the sun at a higher angle a lot of the colour is leached out. It's nice and saturated here.
