Silver gulls are among my favourite bird species. They are also among the most successful of
species in terms of their ability to adapt to changing environments. Since the beginning of European
migration to Australia in 1788, it is estimated that the number of individuals around the
Australian shoreline has increased by a factor of between 5 and 10. Silver gulls especially thrive
on human refuse and will eat almost ANYTHING. Their numbers have reached pest proportions in some
places. Some environmentalist groups advocate large scale culling programs. Having said all of
that, these birds possess a friendly (even personable) demeanour. I like them.
