An interesting footnote to the Portland story is that a few years back, the local council sought to
attract more visitors to the town by promoting its historic-looking architecture and by engaging an
artist to paint some old style advertising to the side of commercial buildings. I am pleased to say
that in spite of the town's obvious poverty and occasional vandalism, there is relatively little graffiti.
