D70 with 60mm F2.8 Macro lens. This is where the D70 really shines - try the Original size pics. All shot NEF and post processed for best colour. If you have the bandwidth, I highly recommend looking at the original size versions... it is quite a trip. Hair looks like tinted raw spaghetti, rice looks like quartz paperweights...

All except the money shot (!)and spider were taken using the D70 built in flash, using an A4 sheet of paper stuck around the lens as a diffuser and light tent. (see last pic on gallery for setup). As cheap a technique as it gets...

Any compression artifacts are pbase. I had to recompress to save some space...

Interesting point. The concept can be made to work, I suspect the limiting factor might be power - the current system struggles to get a really small aperture, so nearly doubling the working distance would hurt it further. Easy solution though: use tracing paper instead of ordinary paper. Or do what I did - move on to a dedicated flash unit. Even a cheap crappy manual flash has plenty of power as this distance. I never intended this method to work as well as it did - It was a quick hack that ended up being useful more often than I thought.

Wow, nice macros. I especially like the multicolored bubbles with the one large mother bubble! I've got a D70 and am planning on getting a 105 macro. Think your paper diffuser would work with a 105? Or would the subject be too far to catch enough diffused light?

Hi Andy, Edited! glad to see you having fun with it. I just got a SB-800 and some extension tubes, so expect more when I get a minute. But the 55mm manual should not be a problem - I am completely manual when shooting macro anyway, so you aren't giving up anything really... That eye is one unusual puppy - what is going on there? Unfortunately I've only got a manual 55mm micro nikkor, but was able to blast enough light into the paper with the SB28 I've also got. ( Which was lucky as I couldn't find a way initally to make the inbuilt flash work ) I've tried to reproduce your exceptional eye shot with the help of an unusual eye. Keep up the good work! Hi David Great pictures, I'm inspired to go out and try some myself. Hadn't thought of using a sheet of paper to diffuse the flash - did try aluminium foil with mixed results. David
