Examples of D70 moire

This gallery shows a quick test on Moire. The shot at Federation square (663) shows tiny colour moire as you would expect on a killer subject like that. Image 211 is very unusual - look at the white line on the road - it has severe colour fringing. The funny thing was, the two shots either side of it suffer none. 211 is normal sharpening, 210 is high sharpening (trying to recreate problem), yet still does not suffer the same issue. 211 is portrait, the others landscape... All were shot NEF, and the colour moire reduction function in Nikon Capture 4.1 did nothing to fix this automatically. So we would have to go to something else like Photoshop CS etc.

Having said all that, I am not too bothered by this - easily fixed in post, and not that bad except in very unusual circumstances. If this is as bad as things get then it is not the killer issue some are making it out to be, the camera is so strong in so many areas it is still a great buy.

One last thing - VIEW THE FULL SIZE original - the smaller sizes are lower quality resizes on pbase, and do not reflect the quality in the original...

Playing this game is nice but somewhat unfair since moiré is proper to digital photography anyway and is easy to explain when one knows how the thing works.
Pixels on a chip are aligned in hrorizontal rows and in straight lines. Every line is offset to the next one and this is a phyisicaly setup one can't change. This is also the case in avideo camera chip which suffer from the same moiré pattern problems as digital camera ccd's do.
The overlay of the separate frames in the 3 colours produce this. One can try to allign those as good as possible, on oblique lines the moiré effect remains and is impossible to remove.
Only by reducing a picture in size or viewing it in a reduced size, makes the moire effect change and where some has been in a large picture, it disappears when reducing the picture and it appears on other places. This unavoidable.
So before now shooting on a D70, play this game by producing the same shot with a D70, a D100, a Eos1, a Eos 300 and just any other well known good SLR or bridge camera and you will see that all of them produce more or less the same amount of moiré patterns.
Note that the Kodak N type SLR's are the worse in this "problem".
When a picture is constituded by millions of square pixels, you have to accept that oblique lines are not straight but are drawn in a stair form, and the less big a picture is in size and the more you compress itn the better you will see those "stairy' lines appear.
The D70 is somewhat what one can call "the best" produce in SLR cameras at the moment and it can compete in many fields, especially in picture quality, with cameras like the EOS1d Mk2 which is probabely and undoubtfully the best digital on the market yet.
This is a reference, especialy when you compare the prices of both cameras.
So if you wanna continue this compare game, shoot images of a fly-grid with small square shaped holes or a suit or dress with very fine checkerd or crawfoot patterns and you will
see all the colours of the rainbow appear.
So accept that some shapes, patterns and angles of view need to be avoided and if you picture is not good, make another one from another angle or ask the person to change cloth. At least this is what TV stations do and they , still today, ask you to avoid fine checkerd or crawfood patterned cloth and they know the reason for this.
Noone asks you to take pictures of road painted lines anyway ......except when you drive a car, they are of no interest.

i wonder, you guys, why are you so surprsed- these lens are not the best nikkon produces. buy nikkor 50/1.8, and results will be much better. and one other thing is to say: when you see moire or color fringing on your screen, it doesn't mean you will see it after you print these pictures. you are just shooting the bull. even the most expensive camera in the world produces now and then some fringing and moire.

Guys, I am posting these pics to show people what the D70 can do. I am not really bothered by them, as noise and moire are both eliminated rather easily in post. Someone not used to post processing might not like it and prefer the 300D. Each to his own.

And I think the noise is equal or better than the D100 - but these things are very hard to compare given how much noise varies with exposure and sharpening settings. And the noise can be totally eliminated with Noise Ninja or Neatimage if that is your thing. People forget how bad film grain used to be..

For the dollars this is a great camera.

I do think it is not moire but color fringing and I think the lens is responsible for that and not the D70. However, I have seen the moire in the samples of the building with the unusual shapes..what a shame..there is a lot of people out there waiting for this camera and I am afraid it will deceive many of them...noise is also much worse that the d100..have you tried to process images with C1 or PS CS?

Thanks for the pics. Whatever it is it's pretty bad. In fact I can see the moire in 211, 210. It's just less obvious in 210.
I agree there are softwares can fix almost anything you need to fix, then what's the role of camera? just take a dirty picture and wait to be fixed by a bunch of softwares? should a D-SLR do better than that? no offense, just feel there is no problem at all for people to look for a dreamed camera and talking good and bad about it. :)

Are you sure what you see in the white line in 211 is moire? It looks like slight CA to me. The same effect is visible in the white line bottom left corner of 212. Green and purple in the line at details and also at edges. That is what it looks like on my 120 ppi monitor.

Moire is easier to fix than sharpness. If the moire reduction in Capture is the only method you know of for reducing moire, you may be happy to know that there are many other techniques out there that will easily fix this. Quite frankly, I'm surprised at how wound up people are over this.
