Skyscraper Reflection, Manhattan

"New York, New York, it's a wonderful town!
The Bronx is up and the Battery's down
The people ride in a hole in the ground,
New York, New York, it's a wonderful town!"

Talk about culture shock! A few days after my visit to the Mojave Desert, Route 66 and the little town of Barstow (see previous photographs in this gallery), I traveled to Manhattan to visit my daughter. Rebecca was my wonderful tour guide for a few days. I enjoyed being a tourist and my head frequently tilted up to view the massive skyscrapers.

At dusk, emerging from the lobby of the Chrysler Building - the iconic example of Art Deco architecture - I glanced up to discover the building as a reflection in the mirrored windows of the skyscraper across the street.

Reminds me of the giant LCD screens in big cities. But you found one that tells the romantic story of the city itself - beautiful, vertical, energetic and colorful. Great image.

Culture shock is right! THe city lights glimmer so beautifully in the glass of this building, and do not appear to really be standing still...much like all of New York does! I do love the flag at the top as well, creating even a little bit MORE confusion to the perspective.

Pure magic, Dave - you find the moment in light, time, space and color that distills the essence of Manhattan's symbolic powers: wealth, glamour, energy. A small American flag enters the frame from above and seems to caress the windows of the skyscraper -- offering its blessing to this iconic cultural facade.
