The Flag Raiser

The Flag Raiser

"Do you want to see a real flag?"

Tom Lewis ran the flag up the pole at his machine shop in Barstow, California, not far from historic Route 66.

Rich colors, a powerful clenched fist, and a man looking away from the flag.
What is a "real" flag? Another reality to peruse.

You've outdone yourself with this one, Dave. I love everything about it - your vantage point, the content and especially those vibrant colors. The pride Mr. Lewis exhibits in this simple task is more than implied, it's palpable.

Your low vantage point, choice of wideangle lens, great light, rich primary colors, and a strong wind to unfurl the flag, all add up to an impressively evocative image. One of the most famous pictures of all time was a flag raising (Iwo Jima, 1945) -- the genre itself has become iconic. You take full advantage of all of this here, Dave, to make a memorably expressive image. The strength evoked by that clenched fist, and the sense of pride he carries with him, are palpable.

Is this Tom the Welder?? Looks like he's still around and going strong. I like the flag colors waving against the blue sky too! Brings back memories from when I went on your Rt. 66 trip.
