May 22, 2005 - Mmmm, Strawberries

The Central Valley of California provides much of the food for the United States. At this time of year, fruit stands in the Central Valley are ubiquitous, like this one near Sangor. We had a great time purchasing strawberries from the nice woman behind the counter and then we ate the wonderfully fresh strawberries as we made our way down the Central Valley.

Wonderful “In their element” portrait Dave – The Central Valley of California is dotted with little fruit stands. Like this one, many feature strawberries grown by family members who migrated here in the last 10 years or so. It seems that the strawberry stands are primarily ran by hard working Asian people who are indeed experiencing the American Dream. Many times an evening treat consists of ice cream with fresh strawberries picked that day from the stand I stop at on my way home from work.

This reminds me of a childhood memory. Every Saturday this wagon would roll up to our house and then this man would open up his stand. He had a large bell in his hand and who would make rhymes about fruit. Something like..Daisies for the Ladies, but he did this with fruit. We called him the" Yeller" because his voice was booming. Everybody came from their houses with their wicker baskets to purchase his fresh fruits. Thanks for that memory, sorry for this long post.
