New Mexican Mythic

There are those places that we come to associate with myth and history, art and artifice, with spirit and power, with intellect and with intuition. Such places seem to abound in Northern New Mexico. Some are obvious: they are at a pueblo, or inside of an old church, and in a sweeping mountain vista. Some of these places, like the photograph above of a gallery and a reflection in the window in downtown Santa Fe, are less obvious, but just as fraught with meaning.

There is, to my mind, something to ponder about the meaning of art in this photograph. I think there is something artful about it, and something artificial, too. For the subjects - the paintings, the reflection of the architecture on the opposite side of the street - were created by others: the artist, the gallery owner, the glass maker, architects. By fusing the two images, of the paintings and the reflection in the window, I've somehow made them one of my own, given the two life and at least the potential for new meaning by seeing them and interpreting them through my own eyes.

Fantastic and spiritual, Dave! Is this one image or a montage? I like the translucence which lends itself to spirits and ghosts.
