Fun with crops

As a self imposed rule, I generally don't go back and crop images out for posting here or for printing.
I guess I'm a purist, idealist or whatever and believe your eye, along with the camera, should be able to get "the one".

However, I'm bending the rule as an experiment or maybe I'm just a little bored.

Some of these images were cropped from photos already here on PBase, some are first time posts.
If you click on one to view it, there just may be a link to the original.

How could I have missed this gallery! So this is the first time I have heard about your self imposed rule :) These crops are great. I myself crop about all my photos I take. I guess it keeps me from worrying about in camera cropping. I lazy :) But you know what they say, "Rules were meant to be broken." Art

You've reinforced something I've recently decided to become really aware of. Of course the price paid here for more options is endless uncertainty. I only found a couple that were actually better cropped than not cropped. All the others were pretty much equal but often with a different message. A very big well done and thanks. V

I'm glad you stretched your rules to create this gallery. While I feel strongly that news photos should not be altered, I don't feel the same about artistic images. You, the artists, compose what viewers see whether it's with your lens or your editing. Perhaps it's my lack of classical photographic training, but either seem equally valid to me. When I compared the original shot of the bird with the one you have here last in the gallery, I found the cropped version much more powerful. But it's always interesting to learn about others' views. Thank you for sharing yours.

An interesting experiment, David - sometime you see something different once you've taken the shot. I love the portrait against the tree; you've made it really intriguing.

OK, here's my take: there's no reason that the best representation of a scene must conform to a 4:3 aspect ratio (or whatever.) If the message of the image is better conveyed with a different ratio, then go for it! The crops in this gallery are great examples; several of them clearly "ought" to be in their cropped form. Great experiment, great work.
