While I was shooting the summer pond shots in colour my wife Anne took some shots using an infra red camera that shoots in black and white.
For those interested, we started off with a stock standard Canon 450D camera that had become overtaken by later cameras and rather than selling it at a significant loss we decided to send it to the USA for conversion. (There are a couple of UK workshops that can carry out the work now but the States have been doing it longer and do a good job)
Basically a digital camera has an almost clear filter right in front of the sensor that allows normal colours that your eyes see to get through but holds back infra red and UV. They remove the original filter and replace it with one that prevents colours getting through but allows infra red light through, it`s that simple. You do have to select the right lighting conditions and subject matter and you never really know what the shot will turn out like till you view them. The new filter does allow a touch of colour through at times and this can be used to enhance the shots if need be.
