According to an 1867 Family Genealogy found at the PA Historical Society:
The 1st of the Howell Family, Aaron, came from Wales. His wife, Prudence, was probably an Englishwoman. It is likely they settled upon the lower part of the Delaware River – near Swedesborough, or Sculltown (NJ). They had 4 children: Lemuel, William, George and Rebecca. Dates for William, George and Rebecca are unknown.
Lemuel was married twice; to Rachel Killey, then to Tamar Kennard Cox. He had 16 children, fairly well documented. William married Hannah Carmean, and had 3 children, fairly well documented. All 3 and descendents in Macon, IL. George returned to England to recover an estate and never returned. Nothing more is known of him. Rebecca married Elijah Perry, a Quaker and carpenter by trade. They lived in Burlington then moved to New York.
There are a number of Aaron Howells in New Jersey but confirming parentage to Lemuel has been unsuccessful.
More recent family history has our Aaron Howell as a private in the Morris County Militia during the Revolution. He is in the Pennsylvania Society Sons of the Revolution, Centennial Register 1888-1889 #717 9472 under Charles Harkness Howell. Charles was also Henry Cooper Howell’s son and George Rushton Howell’s brother. But there is little data supporting this. I have explored the Howell Tree DNA but see no name connection so far.
My Tree is on Ancestry.com under the name Henry Cooper Howell. Best regards, Peter Davidson Howell
