Castle Howard Yorkshire

Charles Howard 3rd Earl of Carlisle asked the playwright John Vanbrugh to build him a new home in 1699. The astonishing collaboration that followed produced one of England's finest Stately Homes which in my collection deserves a Gallery of its own. Renowned for its architecture, rich art collections and subline landscape Castle Howard is still the home to the Howard family.
My sincere thanks and gratitude to the staff at Castle Howard for granting me permission to take photographs inside the House I hope I have not let you down.

It's amazing where your lineage takes you my Grandmother was a Howard her father was John Howard then the line shoots right up to the Howard's of England I enjoyed looking at the pictures of the Howard's Mansion. Again thank you for the awesome pictures. I am from Indianapolis Indiana and I am Clayton Mosley!!

I enjoyed Brideshead revisited. The castle interested me enough to google it.And I was glad I did your pictures are wonderful. Was looking for that queens bed in red.. Old man Marchmain called it his death bed.

Many years ago we, my friend and I, saw "Brideshead Revisited, and we decided that we would take a trip to England to go and visit Castle Howard ... We never regretted it, it was wonderful. To put a crown on this visit, we went to the cafeteria and had what I believe is a typical Yorkshire dish : "Toad in a Hole" We bothe enjoyed it very much. Your site is beautiful. I recently saw the production "The Bucaneers" and was delighted with the Castle Howard and its beautiful rooms and grounds. Your pictures are outstanding and show many lovely views but we would love to see it in person. Is the Castle open to the public at all? We are coming over the pond in July for 3 weeks and are just now planning our itinerary.
Could you please tell me it is possible to visit there?

Do you mean the ghostly figures in the passage and corridor photos - they are free standing cut outs provided by the House

It's beautiful, now I have to come and see it in person. Margaret Howard was one of my Great Grandmother's. I would love to meet my family there some day if possible. I'm also related to Robert Bruce Cotton.

Visited Castle Howard twice on guided tours (several years apart) and recently watched Brideshead Revisited on video...enjoyed your pictures very much...I have exterior shots only.

I have become addicted to Genealogy and found Margaret Howard born in Howard Castle as one of my many GREAT(S) Grandmothers so i had to go to the internet and research. WOW! What a beautiful home and I was thrilled to learn it was still in the family and lovingly preserved. I am just a small town country girl in Harrah, Oklahoma, USA and finding many prominent English ancesters has been so exciting. I have learned so much. What a beautiful gallery you have and I loved this, just reading about Architecture of Britain by John Summerson and remembered the TV series of Brideshead which was unsurpassed. I think that Castle Howard was a dominant character in the series. A beautiful beautiful place and your photos do it justice.

I was fortunate enough to visit Castle Howard in 1994 when a classmat eof mine now living in York took me there. I was reminded of it tonight as i saw a preview for Brideshead Revisited, as I thought I remembered my friend said that movie was filmed there. I was curious so I Googled it...it brought back fond memories of my time in England. It was an amazing place to me then and your gallery of photos is wonderful. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Last night my wife and I saw a private screening of Brideshead Revisited, followed by a delightful conversation between the audience and visiting star Haley Atwell. As soon as I returned home I had to look up Castle Howard on the Internet and was pleased to find this photo collection (note that the official Castle Howard web site provides only an aerial photo of the house, but no interior shots). I shall put Castle Howard on my "Bucket List" (by all means see the movie of the same name!) and recommend your web site to my friends and fellow fans of Brideshead Revisited.

I'm using a book called 'The Arts - Painting, Drawing, Sculpture and Architecture' for the 'aged' paper (for collage in painting) and came across Castle Howard, Yorkshire -"the English contemporary of the Palace at Versailles" so thought I'd 'google' it and have a look.....very impressive - I'm travelling to London and Paris for the first time in June this year and was going to see the Versailles Palace but may opt for Castle Howard...next stop for me is to get a satellite picture of it! Saw the opening shots for a tail of two kitties and was dumb struck when I realized what I was seeing - coming over the bridge from the pasture up the stream to the two flood walls and across the pond to the outside shots of Castle Howard. There was no mistaking the view as I was just there two years ago. Missed the peacocks though.
