Regal Moth

Carnegie Museum of Natural History

Dr. John Rawlins holds a Regal Moth, Citheronia regalis that was found locally. Both a male and female had been found mating and placed in a large cardboard box. The intent is to have the female lay her eggs inside the box so that they may hatch in a safe place. These moths are becoming extinct here in PA.

I've never seen one of these. How interesting, and colorful!

These moths must be rare. They have always been around my home in western Ky, but when I showed pictures of them to everyone they said they had never seen anything like it before. I will try to post a shot of the Ky variety when I get home :)
