The Three Graces adorn the side of an ancient Roman sarcophagus from around c.225. Made of marble, it was created by a wealthy Roman citizen to depict how happy and trouble free the afterlife was going to be. You see, at the time of it’s creation, the Empire was in a serious time of strife with three of it’s emperors being slain in less than twenty years.

It’s also an all time favorite icon of mine and I was pleased to find it today. I hadn’t known it was there before…
