The Wilderness
‘…when entering the Wilderness…’ encapsulates the overarching experience of my time living in the outback of Australia:
‘…when entering the Wilderness…’ one crosses the threshold into liminality; a place where all social status, identity and present sense of self becomes obsolete and absurd.
‘…when entering the Wilderness…’ the sojourner is in a state of change…having left one place, but not yet having arrived at another.
‘…when entering the Wilderness…’ the sojourner has gone ‘walkabout,’ they are on a ‘vision quest’; an inward passage of purification of ‘going forward… into the past… to sustain the future’.
‘…when entering the Wilderness…’ nature offers a space for spiritual change - a rite of passage where a hero’s journey is made.
