The Chilcotin is a very large area in west-central British Columbia, due west of the Fraser River and the town of Williams Lake. It stretches nearly 500 kilometers to the west and includes a variety of landscapes including the highest mountains in the Coast Range. Magnificent Chilko Lake is right in the middle.

Bear site.JPG
The Disney movie "The Bear" was filmed on this site. The campsite here can accomodate about 30 vehicles and there's a boat lauching area. A nature trail follows the edge of the lake and give a wonderful panorama from the bluffs about 150 feet above the lake.

There are 6 different species of junipers growing on the bluff. This shows some of the heavy crop of berries on one of the bigger specimens. Some of the junipers are more than 500 years old.

That's me trying unsuccessfully to hold up that big branch!
I measured the tree with my tape and the girth at the base was 15 feet.
This is one of the oldest trees in the area, about 700 years old.

Choelquoit Lake panorama
This panorama of Choelquoit Lake looks westward toward the mountains of the Chilko Range. The lake has sandy, marl shorelines and there's a nice campsite in the open fields. Warning, do not attempt to drive down to the beaches, the sand is very unstable.
Chilko2.jpg
This shows a cloud of pine pollen being blown off the trees on the far shore and also shows how transparent the water is.
