The Gang Ranch

This is the famous Gang Ranch in central British Columbia, established in 1865. It covers 1,080,000 acres on the Fraser-Chilcotin Plateau west of Williams Lake. It's gone through a very turbulent history but it remains the largest ranch in the British Commonwealth. It runs approximately 12,000 head of beef cattle.

The other famous ranches in the area include the Empire Valley ranch south of Churn Creek.

I traveled from Idaho and spent four months on the ranch in September, October, November, and December of 1968. I lived in a cinder block apartment complex. I rode horses, explored, met interesting people, and left with many fond memories. It took forty-five minutes to drive four miles to the Dog Creek store where we could buy cheese--which was a luxury. For Thanksgiving dinner, I roasted a goose, and at Christmas we ate moose fillets. From the Fraser River we had salmon. One day, a ranch hand named Little Jimmy let me ride his horse. It was, I heard later, the fastest horse on the ranch. I barely got headed out, when it spooked and ran away with me holding on for dear life. It raced like lightning along a winding, dirt road leading from the barn to the Big House corral where it came to an abrupt halt that sent me sprawling on the ground. When I managed to stand up I was shaking. I dusted myself off, left the horse in the corral, and hiked all the way back to the barn. Little Jimmy was lucky I couldn't find him. I forgave him when I was given a beautiful, sorrel mare to ride during my stay. I rode her all around the lower ranch. The setting was wild and wonderful. I enjoy these beautiful pictures, and recall having been at nearly each site. I treasure the memories and the opportunity I had to experience such a wild and amazing place.

My uncle Frank Peters passed away this week, his passing has remined me of his history and how he spoke of his time at the ranch. He loved the open spaces and the freedom. Besides for the gang ranch his next best memories where of his time at Douglas lake.

I worked here in 1978.The food was great and the views even better. Many great memories.Sad to hear they wont let you on the property. I am going to inquire as i was going to visit there one day. I have some photos i should post also./

My family is interested in taking a tour of a ranch in B.C. We farm and ranch in Saskatchewan and would like to see if my dad could ride for a day or two on a working ranch in B.C. He has talked for many years about the Gang Ranch and his wish to ride in such amazing country and its rich history. This would be a memorable experience for his 70th birthday. Any information would be greatly appreciated if the Gang Ranch allows visitors or another ranch in the area. Thanks!

Interesting to read about the ranch.I have never been there though, but my fahter died there in a hunting accident in November 1969 only 37 years old. /Borje Jonsson Sweden

I lived on the Ranch as a child, and I have very fond memories. Thank you for sharing these photos, as I have none from the time I spent there. What a trip down memory lane! I attempted to visit once a few years ago and was commanded to leave the Ranch, and they had no use for visitors. Sad, because I had looked so forward to seeing my childhood home. My dad, who worked on the Ranch, would have loved to have seen these photos, if he were still alive. Thanks again - I appreciated seeing the Ranch again!

I was a cowboy there at the Gang Ranch a couple of times in the late 70s and early 80s under two different owners. It was a lot bigger then. Used pack my string to get from one camp to another. I got a bunch of low quality photos from those days somewhere around.

While on a horseback trek out of Relay cow camp, I took a photo of a rundown cabin at Prentice Lake which, according to our wrangler,apparently was built by Chilko Choate as accommodation for cowboys who spent the summers with herds grazing in the area. Is there any truth to this? What would be the approximate timeline?

Chilco Choate, I is me a grown up snot nosed kid who piled wood and drove horses from Lost Valley to Hungry Valley except the Horses were behind me. Lets say you were somewhat dissapointed with me. I am now a engineer and have many patented inventions. It was you that gave me the inspiration to protect the environment and its precious waters.

I went thru there during the early 70's as a kid and stayed at Chilco Choate's camp for a week, during the first part of July. I had the best time of my life.

Hi My name is Chilco Choate & I have lived in the centre of the GR summer grazing area for over 50 yrs.. Still here. Some errors in your info.. The GR is no where near being the "million acre" ranch it once was as it's grazing license is now more like 800,000 acres. Also it does not run 12,000 cattle now, but more like 2500 head. And it was never the largest ranch in the British Commenwealth or even in B.C.. Check out Douglas Lake Ranch in B.C. & others in Alberta.

This is such a beautiful place! My Dad worked here before I was born and I am hoping to come and at least visit. He says when we all have horses he might bring us to visit.
