Over the past few years, in several stages, my father has walked from his house in Amsterdam to Cracow in Poland. Two or three times a year, he would take some time to walk another stage, always starting from the exact place where he ended last time. A straight line would be about 1000km, but he took a long detour through Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic, just about doubling the total distance.
In may 2012, he did the final stage from Vienna (Austria) to Cracow in 3,5 weeks. My uncle accompanied him for two weeks and I joined them for the final days and the finish in Cracow. I had never been farther east in Europe that Berlin, so it was interesting to finally see something of Poland. It's a beautiful country, with a well developed countryside and Cracow is a wonderful historic city to walk around in, and yet has a very modern and young cultural atmosphere. There are many students, and tourists as well so there's no lack in arts and entertainment.
