"Sausage Law" Protest March Panama

Tuesday 29 June 2010 - Panama City, Panama. President Martinelli was playing host to the Central American Integration System, at which the president of South Korea was in attendance and (at that moment) the president of Colombia and prime minister of Italy were due to arrive. Thus it was an opportune time for environmentalists, organized labor and the political opposition to protest against recent legislation, most of all Law 30, the "Chorizo Law" with many provisions that many segments of society find objectionable.
Due to divisions in the left and its labor affiliates, there were actually two protest marches, this one to the scene of the summit at the Sheraton Hotel in which the CONATO labor federation and the ULIP labor/left coalition took part, and at the same time a march to the Supreme Court by the CONUSI labor federation and the FRENADESO labor/left coalition.
For a time the police tried to block this march at the intersection of Via Brasil and Calle 50, but then they relented and let the protesters continue onwards to just a bit more than a stone's throw from the summit. There was no violence.
