Telmo, named after Saint
Pedro González Telmo, is the oldest barrio of Buenos Aires. It is a well-preserved area of the Argentine metropolis and is characterized by its colonial buildings. Cafes, tango parlors and antique shops line the cobblestone streets, which are often filled with artists and dancers. San Telmo's attractions include old churches, such as San Pedro Telmo, museums, antique stores and a semi-permanent antique fair in the main public square, Plaza Dorrego. Tango-related activities for both locals and tourists are also popular. Every Sunday, thousands flock to Feria San Telmo (San Telmo Fair), a street fair that takes place along Defensa Avenue. The
fair is composed of over 300 booths offering antiques, various art work and souvinirs. Visitors also enjoy live music, tango performances, street artists and experience local food. |
