Fort Point

Fort Point is one of San Francisco's landmark structures. Built in the 1850'5, it not only survived the great earthquake and fire of 1906, but also from demolition during the building of the Golden Gate Bridge. Although its location was in the path of the bridge, chief engineer Joseph Strauss was so intrigued by the fort's architecture, that he designed a steel arch over it.

Today the fort is a unit of the National Park Service, officially designed as Fort Point National Historic Site. It was built to protect San Francisco Bay before the Civil War and its masonary brickwork was a marvel of architectural design and craftsmanship.

The fort is forever remembered in Hitchcock's classic film "Vertigo"; this is the site where Kim Novak jumped into the bay with Jimmy Stewart diving in to rescue her (though on a set).

The fort's graceful arches, dark passageways, civil war weaponry, officers quarters and one-of-a-kind views offers a fascinating glimpse into our nation's past.
