my dad rented a space at the mill as an antiqe restorer for twenty years. he took me to the mill when i was younger and i was awed by the amazing antiquety of it all. i loved to look through the windows of the abandoned factories cast in the orangre shade of of the setting sun that filtered through holes in the crumbleing roof. inside, i would see rusting old machinery like steel presses and hughe gantry cranes and picture in my mind what it would have been like to stand looking here in the mill's hayday, 120 years ago. the thing i wanted most to do was go inside them and take a closer look, but the signs warning of falling brick and the wroght iron bars stopped me. i reognise every one of the pictures in the gallery, even the goats i used to feed stale bread and grass to. i some of the pictures, the building my dad rented can be seen. my dad (along with every other tenante that remained) was evicted from the property so that they could tear it down and build condos on top of it, yes, thats right they are going to tear it down. i have seen them bringing in large drills to take core samples of the ground for soil toxicity rating. becaus two years prior to his eviction, my dad had renewed a five year lease, he fought the case in court, feeling that he was entitled to some compensation, but the new owner of the mill was about to sell it three hundred million dollars and he had no patience for lawsuits, and all the money he could want. he hired many lawyers (and it is our belife that he bribed the judge). i wont go into the details of the lawsuit, but my point is that it greatly sadens me to see a place that i loved so much be torn down when techinically it is a historic site and should not be harmed in any way. murray mill will always be remebered in my mind and on this website

To Guest, Sounds odd, since the occupied retail structures I went into appeared up to code. But it's good to know there's people with so little to do, they have time for policing everyone else's business. Perhaps you'd like to see all history erased, since any ties to the past probably go against your agenda (whatever that might be). Why not post your email address so others could congratulate you on such an honorable conquest? Little minded people who'd do such a thing give me nausea.

Another location is visit when in the area is Continental Gin in Prattville AL. Take time to research Daniel Pratt for whom the city is named. I passed Murray a couple of weeks ago and put the Atlanta Fire Department onto the fact that the sprinkler systems are out of service. Sadly this means this historic complex just waits for the conflagration event when something goes wrong... :-(((((

I stumbled upon this place with my husband yesterday and after a lot of online research found your gallery and the history of the site. I am totally fascinated!!! What a wonderful peak back into a time well gone. The photos capture its mystery and beauty spectacularly. I wish I could see more of it myself. Thanks!!!

This place is absolutely fantastic. I am going to have to make a trip there. I assume the complex is still with us as of your comment about visiting it in 2008. I have taken loads of pictures of fabulous old industrial sites around the country, some still in use but many now gone this though is one of the best.

Thanks, Maybe I'll have a nice wide lens one day to get the type shots that realy need to be taken there. It's so full of character, and the history associated with it is amazing. It's a true treasure of Atlanta to so many, I hope it can remain for many generations to come. If not, I'm thankful there's still people around who'd be so open to let others photo document it so freely. hello - it is wonderful to see images of the mill again. i used the mill as the site for my architectural thesis project in 1995 as a school for experimental music, combining abstract building forms with the remnant brick walls. it truly is a wonderful place - the generations of use are so evident, from production and manufacture at the turn if the century through habitation, art and time. great images. thanks.
