Au XIVème siècle les mutations de la société rendent caduc le monde féodal et affaiblissent le rôle de l’Eglise. En 1309, Avignon remplace Rome en tant que siège de la papauté. A la suite du Grand Schisme d’Occident qui voit s’affronter le roi de France Philippe Le Bel et la pape Boniface VIII d’une part et, en Italie, les guelfes et les gibelins, deux papes coexistent, l’un à Rome, l’autre à Avignon. Cette situation va durer de 1378 à 1418. Avignon profite de cette situation pour se couvrir de bâtiments et de monuments.

In the 14th century, changes in society made the feudal world obsolete and weakened the role of the Church. In 1309, Avignon replaced Rome as the seat of the papacy. In the wake of the Great Western Schism, the King of France, Philippe Le Bel, and Pope Boniface VIII clash while, in Italy, the Guelphs and Ghibellies do the same. Consequently from 1378 to 1418 two Popes coexist one in Rome and the other in Avignon. Avignon takes profit of this situation by erecting new buildings and new monuments.
