Le Phare de la Vieille.

- Lost on the Silver Sea -

Situated in the Raz de Sein, one of the most dangerous places of Europe, in the middle of powerful sea currents and in the middle of sharp reefs, the lighthouse was put into service in 1887 and completely automated in November, 1995 dates to which one the last guards left the lighthouse.

I imagine the solitude and the frights of the lighthouse keepers. Fifteen days of watch and one week of rest on the ground, such was the schedule. But, in winter, violent storms blew for several weeks, preventing any boat from approaching the lighthouse. As days and nights had to seem long then to those who waited for the succession. Furious winds lifted gigantic waves which threw themselves in the assault of the lighthouse, making the narrow rock on which it is built tremble, and the stocks of foods which ran out ... Fortunately since 1995 nobody anymore lives in this hell and in the technicians obliged to go there to assure maintenance works are helicoptered.
