Avant l’arrivée du chemin de fer en Bretagne, le voyage de Paris était très long. Il fallait 72 heures pour rejoindre Quimper en malle-poste : trois jours d’inconfort extrême. En diligence - plus confortable - le voyage était encore plus long...Les écrivains et les peintres furent les premiers à s’intéresser à cette province d’autant plus délaissée qu’elle demeura indépendante (le Duché de Bretagne) jusqu’au XVI ème.
L’arrivée du chemin de fer à Quimper (1862) et à Brest (1865) marqua l’arrivée des premiers touristes...


The Journey to Brittany.

Before the arrival of the railroad in Brittany, the journey from Paris was very long. 72 hours were needed to join Quimper in mail coach... three days of extreme discomfort. By stagecoach, more confortable, the journey was even longer... The writers and the painters were the first ones to be interested in this abandoned province wich remained independent (the Duchy of Brittany) until XVI ème.
The arrival of the railroad to Quimper ( 1862 ) and to Brest ( 1865 ) marked also the arrival of the first tourists...
