Pont-l’Abbé est la capitale historique du Pays Bigouden. Elle doit son nom aux moines d’une commune voisine qui bâtirent à l’époque médiévale un pont sur la ria : «Pont Abbatis», le Pont de l’Abbé. Son chateau date du XIIème siècle. Les remparts de la cité furent abattus au XIXème siècle.

Pont-l'Abbé is the historic capital of the Bigouden Land. It owes its name to the monks of a nearby municipality who built in the medieval age a bridge on the ria: "Pont Abbatis", the Bridge of the Abbot. Its castle dates the XIIth century. The ramparts of the town were brought down in the XIXth century.
