It is the most important monument of Laos. It symbolizes the Buddhist religion and the Lao sovereign power. Its construction started in 1566.
After the Siamese and Burmese invasions during the XVIII and XIX centuries it was neglected. The main stupa (on the image) was restored at the beginning of the XXth century.

Après les invasions siamoises et birmanes des XVIII ème et XIX ème siècles il fut laissé à l’abandon. Le stupa principal (à l’image) fut restauré au début du XXème siècle.
