Je m’arrêtais pour déjeuner à la terrasse d’un café bien exposé au soleil. Je choisis une table près du canal et, après que la garçon eut pris ma commande, je rêvassais en contemplant les reflets colorés et mouvants sur les eaux couleur de jade.
Je pensais à cette légende de la Grèce Ancienne : La déesse Hera avait chargé «Argus aux cent yeux» de surveiller la nymphe Io dont elle soupçonnait son Divin Epoux, Zeus, d’être amoureux. Zeus fit tuer Argus. La déesse, éplorée et furieuse, recueillit les yeux d’Argus : «Elle en couvre le plumage de l’ oiseau qui lui est cher (le paon) et les répand comme des pierres précieuses sur sa queue étoilée». (Ovide : «Les métamorphoses». Livre I).

I stopped to have lunch in the terrace of a Café. I choose a table in the sunshine, near the canal and, after waiter had taken my order, I daydreamed by contemplating the colored and unstable reflections on jade color waters.
I thought of this legend of the ancient Greece : the goddess Hera had asked "Argus with hundred eyes" to watch the nymph Io with whom she suspected her Husband, Zeus, of being in love. Zeus made kill Argus. The goddess, tearful and furious, collected the eyes of Argus: " she covers with them the feathers of the bird which is dear to her (the peacock) and spreads them as precious stones on his starry tail ". (Ovide: " The Metamorphosis ". Book I).
