Strange Dhamekh Stupa at sunset. Sarnath.

Buddha came to Sarnath once he obtained enlightenment and delivered there a sermon which became famous. Emperor Ashoka (third century BC), converted to Buddhism, built in this place a set of beautiful stupas and monasteries.
A Chinese monk traveler, Xuang Zhang, who visited Sarnath in 640 reports that the city had a stupa 100 feet high and about 1500 monks living in large monasteries.
Shortly after the Muslim invaders desecrated and destroyed the site that disappeared over the centuries under the vegetation.
Sarnath was rediscovered by British archaeologists in 1835.
The site is now visited by Buddhist pilgrims from around the world ...
