Cuba has been dominated for over 500 years since being discovered in the late fifteenth century. Many foreign countries have occupied Cuba and in spite of this and 54 years of communism, the Cuban people have maintained a strong sense of perseverance The culture and history of Cuba is reflected in the people and their love of their homeland - a place of contrast, , where songs often highlight political and social realities. The people and their music affirm their love and admiration for their country.

These images celebrate the richness of the Cuban people, their culture and joy of life. The physical disrepair of buildings is more evident in the City of Havana. Together, generations of families endure the inadequate conditions. Money and materials for home improvements are rare or not existent and low in budget priority. The daily burden is being able to find and provide food for loved ones.

Notice the architectural detail of the façades, the floors and stairs of marble, wrought iron and fine hardwood handrails, interior details, etc. The buildings along “El Prado” must have been magnificent - the "5th Avenue" of Havana in its heyday.

The smaller city of Trinidad and other smaller cities outside of Havana seem to be somewhat better maintained - especially Trinidad, but there are still pockets of needed repair.

In spite of the hardships, the people continue to live joyously - reveling in their music, singing and dancing - music is everywhere you turn. The music seems to sustain them when other amenities of life are less available. Music is the soul of Cuba.
