The Yacare Caiman was probably the most common creature we encountered during our Pantanal trip. As we visited during the dry season the ponds were all drying up causing them to be quite concentrated; in some ponds we saw as many as 100 of them in one place. I am told that it is estimated that around 10 million of them live in the Pantanal alone. The good news is that they aren’t as big as the American Alligators that I am used to at home and they don’t seem terribly aggressive so we never felt threatened by them.
