Cape May Warbler

Texas

www.texastargetbirds.com

Last week I started seeing reports of a Cape May Warbler at a popular migrant trap Galveston and at first I thought it must be a misidentification since Cape May Warblers don’t usually show up until the end of spring migration (late April to early May). However, someone posted some photos with their report and sure enough it was a legitimate Cape May! I had some commitments so I wasn’t able to make a trip out to look for it until Saturday and unlike most of the other migrants that had been seen recently the Cape May Warbler was still hanging around feeding on bottle brush flowers. Thankfully he hung around for a few photos during our visit but probably the most fun part of seeing this bird was the speculation about what he is doing here now. Maybe he was with us all winter?

It's been a 'different' winter all across the U.S. this winter. I'm thinking lots of species will be migrating early - - very nice image!
