Rallus elegans
I spent the day today at Brazoria NWR with hope of seeing all the masses of wading birds that have been hanging around Olney Pond for the past couple of weeks. There has been a considerable amount of rain over the past few days and when I arrived I wasn’t too surprised to see water levels much higher than my last visit on Sunday. What I was a little surprised by was how few of the waders were still around. The chance in water level seems to have had a major impact on what birds can use Olney Pond. Even though 95% or so of the birds had moved on there were still some nice photo opps throughout the day. One of my favorites was this King Rail that I was able to photograph at close range as it walked out onto the auto loop. Even though the refuge wasn’t quite the spectacle that it has been recently I was still very glad I made the trip down.
