Aythya collaris

Yesterday afternoon we were out looking for ducks and visited a pond with a bunch of Ring-necked Ducks on it. For the most part they were keeping fairly far away but after a while they started flying from one side of the pond to the other one or two at a time. To my surprise and delight this drake took off and flew close in front of us in beautiful evening light. I was smiling all the way home.
