Eddie Caudill and Grunt

One of the tracks of 3rd platoon, Bravo Co. 2/2nd Infantry, getting ready to move out from Lai Khe basecamp. The soldier with the dog was Sgt. Eddie Caudill, an experienced and brave soldier. He was one of the holdovers from when the unit was "leg", prior to converting to mechanized. I was told that he was badly wounded in late '67 and evacuated home. The dog was our mascot, "Grunt".

I was told by our old platoon leader some time ago that Eddie had passed away, but based on the comments I received after posting that, it was evidently not correct. It's nice to know that he's still among us. He was an exceptional soldier and a really nice person.

I spent a lot of time on perimeter guard at Lai Khe in 1967 while my unit November Platoon, B Co., 1/18th infantry rested between missions. Our Battalion commander for most of 67 was legendary Richard Cavazos, now retired 4 star general. See www.iam777.org/cavazos.htm for very interesting details about Cavazos.

Grunt was a good dog. We adopted him as a puppy and he thought he was in charge. The guys would try to bribe him to get him to ride on their track for the day. Once we were on the road he liked to ride up front under the .50 cal with the breeze blowing in his face.
