Indeed, Ray. I had Pamuk in mind while taking/editing many of these.
Pamuk says it best: These are the sad joys of Istanbul and to see the city in black and white is to see it through the tarnish of history: the patina of what is old and faded and no longer matters to the rest of the world. And hüzün is what he calls the dark, aching melancholy.
