Yellow Flowers

Backyard Brissie oz

Avoid distracting background colours that will draw the eye away from the subject.
Red is the worst colour to have as it draws the eye away from the focal point like no other colour.
This little rule breaker works because it's so sneaky, it looks like a normal picy but the background being red (less red now after Techo rubbished it):-) acts as a real counterpoint to the subject. The even spread & look of the background would not compete wiv the dandelions near as much if they weren't red. But to make the subject matter stronger I tilted the camera to make the dandelions lean to the left giving them a fighting chance of competing for our attention from the evil red mass behind them.
This picy rates an awesome verging on magnificent.....Wot you fink Lonnit:-)

As I do from many of your pictures, I learn that deep darker red can compete equally to a bright yellow. I didn't know this having guessed that bright yellow would top everything. Thanks for your fine illustration. John

Thanks Tommy:-) I was just trying to make sure Lonnit didn't say the background was orange so I didn't break the rule:-) Plus I'm in a psychedelic mood:-)

Modern painters don't talk much about rules such as the "thirds" etc. There are so many other esthetic considerations such as the modernist concern with the perceived flatness of the picture plane and the push-pull of colors out of or receding within the picture plane depending on size, hue, intensity, and brightness. This second version nearly achieves an equal push-pull effect between the red and yellow and the result is near simultaneous attraction that Techo speaks of. This is much better than the earlier overwhelming red. -tv

Yes, Rod, well qualified indeed! Good justification - I'm buying it. As for your tilt - you broke a rule here that you should have adhered to: a diagonal shouldn't go from corner to corner. Instead, your diagonal should have led the eye to the edge of the frame at the upper third line. While we're on the rule of thirds, which was broken, I'll say that you shouldn't have broken it. Pulling back a bit to get the dandies onto the thirds line would have resulted in a much stronger composition. Remember, when you are breaking rules, you must keep other rules firmly intact to add strength to the image, giving it a good, solid foundation. ~ Lonnit

Thanks again Techo mate:-) I hope the bouncing eye effect only confirms the rule breaking nature of this picy................Otherwise I'm toast:-)

It looks good. The before and after :)
It's interesting what you've done. My eye keeps bouncing back between the background and the dandelions.

Thanks Techo:-) I was trying to make the background really red cos you know wot Lonnits like:-)
Here's a less saturated one.

Looks nice but It's more like the mistake of oversaturating ;)
