This is terrific b.c. - talk about leading lines - WOW! :-D CJ

thanks Yves, jano, Debi & JV. jano - as I mentioned I stumbled across this, not knowing it existed. I graduated from this university many years ago, and happened to be wandering around campus for the first time in a while. I read that they can retrieve any item out of about 1.6M volumes within minutes. a far cry from the old card catalogs (paper index cards!) back in my day... microfiche was probably the highest-tech indexing medium back then - b.c.

This is really cool. Very surreal looking.

really great image with a light at the end of the tunnel effect - Debi

I find this photograph amazing with all the lines leading the eye. Lucky you to have such an amazing place to photograph and a great eye. jano

b.c. - Love this - great shot! The b&w is agreeably more preferred over the color version, IMHO. And I can't help but somehow think about Hal in the movie 2001 while looking at this. - Kelly

I like the B&W version, it look more like a abstract work of art. The kind of picture that I like. Alex
ctfchallenge13-Nov-2007 16:24
on further reflection, I agree with the going consensus that leaving the colour in is more of a distraction than adding any particular value to the shot. thanks everyone for taking a look and for the feedback - b.c.

This is cool, with the size & space disorientation. Reminds me of the ending of the 'Raider of the Lost Ark' movie when the government is 'filing away' the Ark.
Rod 13-Nov-2007 08:12
The colour picy looks more of a good snapshot as we can tell what everything is but the B&W lets the imagination loose. If the robot was yellow it would spoil the picy for me, in B&W it blends with the overall picy for added mystery...............I reckon.

This I like a lot b.c. Julie

The B/W version is much more mysterious and thus arouse interest, even though the colored one is not bad at all.. /Oved

To me, this works far better in B&W. The colors aren't vital for the picture.. distracts from it rather. And I love that silvery impression the B&W gives.

I think your color version is very nice too especially if you cropped it just like this one. John
ctfchallenge12-Nov-2007 11:46
thanks again everyone. Fly-re: exposure, I was disappointed the yellow robot didn't come out better exposed and better contrast, and didn't like some chroma noise artifacts in the shadows so I converted to B/W, and had to work at it a bit in PP to get it to what you see. I just posted a different frame shot at lower ISO and in colour over in pendinghttp://www.pbase.com/image/88830752. I guess in my mind at the time I envisioned the yellow robot really standing out among the shiny drawers. but perhaps in retrospect the b/w works better. let me know what you thing - b.c.
Rod 12-Nov-2007 08:06
The highlights at the end really suit this shot. The exposure look spot on to me.

yes, wow! great shot.

This is, indeed, an amazing shot. Perfectly on topic! -- Bruce

wow! what an excellent perspective and brilliant exposure.
i think this shot is an excellent candidate for the dark-green sci-fi tone. i like this as it is too though. -Abstract

What don't you like about the exposure?

thanks k2 & COAmature, appreciate your comments. p.s. tv- speaking of 2001, in fact the robot thingy has a HAL-esque big red light on it, just visible at bottom edge of the frame. I was disappointed the robot was idle down in the dark depths otherwise I would have had a better chance to capture it. original shots in colour came out a bit noisy at 1600 so I thought b/w worked better for this challenge. - b.c.
ctfchallenge11-Nov-2007 17:00
It makes me want to stare at it and the longer I do the better it gets. After I relax my eyes I mostly only see the perspective lines that draw me back to the ladder which makes me look "into" the picture. Great big well done to you. -COAmature

thanks, all. I accidentally stumbled across this yesterday, shot through a window - it's called the ASRS (automated storage & retrieval system) at one of the libraries at University of BC in Vancouver. to get a sense of scale, each of the drawers is maybe 1.5 to 2 feet high, and there were perhaps 4 or 5 of these bays. and Rod actually I _wish_ this one of those HDR thingys, I'm not entirely happy with the exposure and result. thanks again - b.c.
ctfchallenge11-Nov-2007 14:09
This is one of those amazing shots that has no sense of scale. At first I thought of HAL in 2001 and now can't get away from that impression. But the scale here could be much bigger. Great dof makes it work. -tv
