I keep coming back to this.. it is so sad, yet his smile is full of ...maybe hope? Very powerful and I love it in B&W..good choice for this image!

I do think this is a better version. Thanks again for the advice and assistance.
I dont think people think they look out of the ordinary, since they probably have looked they way they do for a long time.
He was standing on a corner near my bus stop. I had brought my camera to work for unrelated reasons. He started the conversation with a not-at-all unexpected request for spare change. I said that I would give him a buck if he let me take his picture. I did not tell him why, and he didnt ask. He readily agreed. I later asked if he was homeless (yes) and for how long (6 months). He said that for a few extra bucks he could get a sandwich, and I obliged. I dont think I had seen him before, and I havent seen him since.
Nice crop on this Charlie and the gold tooth adds a bit more "quirkiness" to the image. Did you ask the gentleman if you could take his photograph because he has "character?" Or, how did you approach him? I have seen many people who have interesting faces but am always afraid to ask them to pose for fear they will be reminded they look a bit out of the ordinary. There must be some sort of script one can use when approaching such subjects? shu
