Thank you Alexeig.

Very nice. Lonely lit window underscores the loneliness of the subject

Dodged that box, does it look any better now (I think it does).

Very creative idea. Too bad about the obstruction but my eyes are very much so drawn to your subject. -COAmature

Thanks, Abs. Agree with you about the documentary feel to it.

reminds me of a scene from movie "American Beauty", where the kid was filming Kevin Spacey through a window, when he was exercising. like the documentary feel in this one. -Abstract

Thanks Sharon and CJ. Appreciate your comments.

Good one Aam! The left block is a little bright but you could darken it up a little if you wanted. It looks as if he's all alone, lonely, and trying to call someone. CJ

Having a good monitor makes a huge difference! Now that I am home and I can see the picture normally I agree with Rod that the squares do work. On the other monitor everything looked black to me except the lit window and the left square. It looks great! ~Sharon

This guy is driving me nuts. I waved to him to get his attention but still didn't see me. Have to throw stones at the window next time (hmm).

I thought about that Debbi. I wasn't hiding, I was standing w/ a camera, had he seen me he would've smiled & I'd say hello to him. I see this guy often when I'm leaving or coming to the house. Was surprised that he didn't notice me.

This is so interesting...yet it makes me feel like a Peeping Tom. I hope you didn't sneak around to get this and that person knows you took it. It makes me feel uncomfortable, but maybe that is what you were going for?

Thanks Tom and Rod for your comments. Like the "why I'm here" idea, and will try burning to see how it works. Cheers.

Well done indeed Aammm this is a ripper of a shot mate. Just to make it a work of ahrt I would burn in (make darker) that balcony then it will balance with the other darker square on the right.
You will then have three sort of squares in the composition wiv the view through the window adding that touch of magic. This is a real photo Aammm, great work:-)

First off, I didn't really notice the "block" much till I read the comments. It adds interest & I don't have to know what everything is. My eyes were right away in the room! The plastic lawn chair, the cell phone?, the smallness, the "Why am I here?" perhaps. This has mood!

Agree with you Sharon about that "block". It's part of the neighbor's house, I believe it's a balcony.

Well, I guess this answers my question about how much background you think is appropriate for a portrait! A very creative portrait in which the composition tells us a lot. I do find the strange gray square a bit distracting - I can't tell what it is, which may be this monitor, so I find myself looking at it a lot, not the subject of the shot. As I mentioned to Tom, this monitor is terrible so I can't comment on the technical aspects of the shot right now. I will comment more when I get back to my calibrated monitor and I can really see the image. Thanks for posting, aam! ~Sharon
