Trapped Inside *

Electronic World and Real Life

This is a "rhetorical" sculpture I made for my ceramics class. We were to create a piece that expressed an opinion. Mine was about how people can be so involved in the electronic world that they are cut off from the real world. They seek relationships and life experiences but find only representations of the real thing. The person you see has a computer in front with MySpace on it, a big screen TV behind with American Idol on it, an iPod in one hand and a cell phone in another. The person is surrounded by speakers and equipment. There is no color in this space and no way to get out. Just outside there is the real world, full of color and richness. It has real relationships, nature, music, all things that seem to be offered inside but are shadows of the reality. The real ones are messy and unsafe but rich and full. So this is an interior inside my house. By the way, I live in this electronic house myself at times like all the other people I know and see who live this way.

Hi Anne, This is a fabulous piece of art and I agree with the message. It is really possible in this day and age to limit one's focus and world to a 2 foot by 2 foot area with an even smaller focus point. I am not sure about the landscape point of view, but then what do I know LOL ? Yvonne

Ann, I am absolutely blown away by your creativity and talent! I've taken a ceramics class and know it is not as easy at it looks - I'd never display anything I ever made! LOL! This is not only creative but very insightful too - we probably all spend way too much time in front of a computer or relating to objects instead of people. Good work! :-) CJ

I love the story to this sculpture Ann & you have represented the truth as I see it really well. Excellent observations.
