Techo,
i am glad you liked the image. personally, i always feel that diagonals help make the shot dynamic...so i didnt even try the 'straight' composition. this also gives me more option to play with dof. 1 inch is in focus, 1/2 is not...front of the needle is in focus, back end is not...which add interest for the viewer.
Jano,
you got it right. this is a shilhouette of a compass, one of my most imporant hiking gears. the photo shows only the outline of a couple of most important parts...eg. needle (without red/white color, you might end up going south, instead of north) and numbers on the circular dial (to calculate degrees). Hope this explanation helps you visualize this silhouette. Thanks for the comment. btw Here is the actual compass:

Hi Abstract - I am having to look at this awhile to determine what the silhouette is - but I've come to the conclusion that it is the sihouette of the compass? hand against the bright background or maybe the item itself?. I'm not sure what this instrument is so I'm baffled by it. It's a really great and sharp photo with the light and gold, but it took me some time to determine how this was on topic, but I think I understand. jano
This photo is quite pleasing to my eye. Hard to point out exactly what does that, perhaps the clarity and the glowing tone. It's interesting you shot this at an angle rather than straight on though.
