Yes, each color has a code in photoshop. If you click on the colors palette, you will see the colors numbers or letters, depending on the nomenclature system. On the RGB (Red-Green-Blue) nomenclature, pure white is 255 Red/255 Green/255 Blue. And blown highlights appear as pure white on screen. When you have that pure white, there is no detail left in that area and that's why blown highlights are a no-no.

Nugar, thank you father for I have sinned :-) The bleeding wife varnished the wood a couple of years ago & what was left didn't shoot too well. I don't know if they were quite 255 but the burn tool made them indescribable which is a notch up from blown highlights:-) Garret, I think 255-255-255 might be PS talk for pure white. I'm only guessing, but Nugar knows.
