07-AUG-2004 Neil Lawson

Rainbow Lorikeets 1st place

Victor Harbor, South Australia

For some reason, this photos shows strange, and interesting detail in the feathers. It looks as if the photo has been oversharpenned, or some sort of paintbrush effect. The only proccessing has been a little cropping, resizing, a frame and a little USM.

Neil, definitely a winner in my opinion and right on topic.

Hi Paul - Thanks for the suggestion - yes, the background doesn't add to the picture. However, if I crop the right I feel that it will centre the bird's head too much in the frame. Also, personally I don't like square looking photos -- but keep the suggestions coming, I appreciate any opinions.

This is a lovely mix of colorful feathers and beautifully composed. Shu

Very nice, Neil, and perfectly on-topic. What do you think of a tighter crop on the right side (perhaps 20%)? The open space in the upper right doesn't hurt the composition, but doesn't help either. In any case, it's a winner.

Thanks for the comments. Don - , I chose a nice colourful colour frame to go with the topic, but yes it is distracting - I couldn't decide what colour to change it to, so I have removed it.
Pops, you are welcome to use it anyway you like - if you want a larger version please let me know.
Gayle - they fly incred-a-bull-y fast. They were in a large walk through avairy, and I thought I would get some in-flight shots. I noted their usual flight path and set my-self up ready - after waiting a number of minutes they would fly off without any warning and wizz past my head, and I would get a very birdless picture. (Pelicans give some warning they are going to take off, and fly nice and sloowww.) Neil

Beautiful birds, and just the right pose to make the photo more interesting. Though I read Canon cameras don't use as much in camera sharpening as others, I find it also that some photos are especially sharp. like those of birds. I only took one bird photo, it was a blue budgee, but the detail of the feathers was really good, especially those on the belly, you could eye each strand out. - Techo

Oh yeah, this is great! I got some shots of lorikeets last week at Healesville sanctuary, but they are nowhere near as good as this. And they don't stay still for long, do they?

Great color. Great action. theFly

This is an excellent contender, Neil... beautiful colors, textures and poses. The frame draws my eye away from the action, however; a neutral frame would keep me focused on the colors of the birds. Don
