Mr. Gheaupteighbtough Head

How do we get "potato" from "Gheaupteighbtough"

Look at it this way - "Gh eau pt eigh bt ough"

Gh as in Hiccough (P) (yes, it is pronounced "hic cup")
eau as in Beau (O)
pt as in Ptomaine (T)
eigh as in Neigh (A)
bt as in debt (T)
ough as in thorough (O)

Now that is really playing with words! Thanks to George Bernard Shaw.

Apparently some would argue that it should be "Ghoughpteighbteau." (That's Gh ough pt eigh bt eau) A google search for "Gheaupteighbtough" go no hits but a search for "Ghoughpteighbteau" got 15 "relevant" hits. I guess this means I don't play at words well, or maybe I do. LOL

Can you imagine what would have happened if the founding fathers of the English language had decided to use that orthography?
