I don't think they hang chickens, these are partridges.

YB, let me clarify my "yuk" to say that it was a successfully artistic "yuk". The focus on the dead animal (chicken) heads is an effective device used in some of the most successful horror and other images. This does it quite well with the red beaks standing out from the ruffled feathers and oh-so-dead eyes. As to food, one of the most satisfying meals I ever had was on a survival hike in the army when our squad was given a live hen and a can of rice for nourishment. Well, we had already been starved most of the day, so at the begininng of our hike, food was the main priority. The question was: how to kill the bird and cook it. Luckily, a midwest farmer was well practiced in wringing a chicken's neck (apologies to those offended by the graphic description). He quickly plucked the feathers and cooked the bird in a steel pot also known as an army helmet. The rice was cooked in its can and we had a feast, or so it seemed to those of us who knew the pleasures of real food instead of prepackaged substitutes.

A stimulating image. An interesting fact copied from Wikipedia..."although more than 90% of animals killed for food in the United States are chickens, the Humane Slaughter Act specifically excludes birds."

Interesting comments and reactions.

It seems we all want our food pre-packaged and sanitized - devoid of any hint of blood or guts, or any indication the animal was slaughtered.

Such is life, the ugly is hidden - photographs are air brushed, euphemisms camouflage embarrassing truths.

I'm not a vegetarian, per se, but I do pay attention to what I eat and where it came from. I would not eat this. Not ever. Penny Street

I am a meat and potatoes guy and about as opposite from vegetarian as you can get. I'm sure the end result will taste excellent but I buy my meats plucked and gutted. Hanging and rotting creates a "yuk" visually and that is what this challenge is about. Did I mention that this is remarkably sharp buy the way? -Doug

Thanks for leaving your comments.

But how many who think this picture is yuk are vegetarians?

They are game birds at a stall in a Farmers Market being "hung" (to suspend game from a hook to allow it to decompose slightly and become more flavoursome).

Agree with the others that this is quite yuk. This topic is opportunity to shoot such. -Doug

This is certainly not appealing. I wouldn't want to get near the stuff!
