A great looking shot. Nice contrast and not overly done in any aspect.

Thanks much you all :-) This version is a little more tidy looking and I'm warming up to the squarish crop as I seldom end up with them and change and lack of predictability is good- I think?

A vibrant and wonderful shot. The colors grab your attention then the details and angles keep you looking. Love it.

Now, I really like this version (& crop).

Wonderful shot. Being able to see the passenger makes the shot for me. ~dtallakson

Wow Brent! Nice exposure and fantastic saturation! - I am amazed at how you find just the right exposure - you maintained a rich blue sky, great light on the subject, and still managed to give us a peek inside the trolly! Crop? - Bah Humbug! As Huey Lewis once said, "It's hip to be square" :-)
aam1234 04-Aug-2008 05:58
The square format doesn't bother me here. Heck, I didn't notice it until Rod mentioned it.
ctfchallenge04-Aug-2008 02:27
I guess I have to try RAW someday. Squares are okay (and this isn't really so square anyway, especially since the angle you have going on inside the photo makes it almost look 3D). You do what YOU like.

Thanks all :-) So squares aren't good huh? I suppose if I set aside my cool 3-D trick cropping right to the bright edge of that door added back in more of the trolley (original is in pending) I would no longer have a square. Of course I did all my cloning magic on the right of the lamp post and will have to redo all that- ugh! But it's a labor of love I guess :-)
Oh, ACR is Adobe Camera Raw Penny. I use either that or Lightroom and both use the same engine to convert RAW files.

very vibrant and an interesting image. Missed the original - Debi

Ok so Rod is right, (although I didn't know girls are square - I thought they are round(?)) this crop is perfect except that it's square. What's ACR?

Nice saturated colors here!

Rod 03-Aug-2008 08:41
Plus it's a girly square crop.........be a man Brent:-)
aam1234 03-Aug-2008 05:10
Looks better and cleaner to me.
ctfchallenge03-Aug-2008 04:51
Works very well for me. Seattle is so full of colors and light. Good angle and I like the light pole stopping the action before the frame. -tv

Good one on the public trolleys.
ctfchallenge03-Aug-2008 01:32
Thanks Carole and Rod :-) Eh, it seems people are split on what I should do with the crop. I'll leave it this way for now, but will put the old version in pending soon. No polarizer Carole, but the sky was pretty darn blue that day. I bumped the saturation by 5% in ACR and vibrance by 15%, both helped the sky a little.

Rod 03-Aug-2008 01:03
This is strange the crop has brought the tram forward to be almost in your face but for some reason my eyes go straight past it & down the street. I think the first version worked better.
ctfchallenge02-Aug-2008 21:39
This is really colorful Brent and I like the crop better in this version too. Did you use your polarizer for this shot and if not, how do you get such nice blue skies? I like the disappearing perspective lines in this too with the trolley wires and the tracks, sidewalk etc. Good one! :-) CJ
ctfchallenge02-Aug-2008 18:47
Thanks all, I went ahead and made some changes to the same image. Everything is a compromise of course, but I think this looks kind of neat? Incidentally, these trolleys are really this bright Mary Anne (very slight bump in saturation). I could spot this one far enough away from my office window to grab my camera and go down thirteen floors to shoot it. Not using the stairs though :-)

I like it - the lines are good and it certainly has enough color. Your idea of cropping off the left might be okay, in my opinion, but not the right too. I know how easy this would be to re-shoot. Maybe a little closer next time? I like the city part too, although maybe you can't have both for the color challenge. Penny Street

I love these brilliant colors, Brent. There really are days when the sun is so bright and the air so clear that the colors almost hurt the eyes. So, is this oversaturated? I really couldn't say...depends on what kind of a day it was. I also agree that it might be better with the building on the right cropped off.

Thanks for all the great feedback everyone! I'll maybe play with this some more later. I did play with the geometry some to get that nice verticle on the left door edge. It looked pretty slick cropping right to the bright edge of the door to create an almost 3-D effect- I may go with that too- not sure why I didn't?
~Brent
ctfchallenge02-Aug-2008 03:37
The crop is OK as is for me Brent. The power lines play along with the theme and composition well. Bursting with color. -COAmature
Jim B (MSP)02-Aug-2008 03:10
Nice bright colors. I agree with Sharon - crop on the right. I'd even crop out the pole and clone out the lines.
Jim
elips02-Aug-2008 02:47
I like this a lot, Brent, and have to agree with aam. But I have an easier solution, if you don't mind a square format, I would simply crop to the edge of the building leaving the light pole. The blue of sky suddenly becomes more obvious and really boosts the seeming intensity of the colors. ~Sharon

Thanks guys :-) Too sharp huh Aam? I didn't sharpen it all that much but I am now noticing some nasty compression stuff going on- darn that 150k limit. Thanks for the opinion on the angle, I was going for leading lines and liked those yellow taxis though you can't see them much at this resolution. Shadows and building cranes (they are everywhere in Seattle) were also an obstacle. I can recheck some other frames I might have, this was just a lunch break grab and would be an easy re-shoot :-)
~Brent
aam1234 01-Aug-2008 22:08
Ouch Brent, easy on the sharpness here. Cool colors, but wish you went a little to the right and got more of the tram and yellow pavement and less of the building and cables.

People asked for honest opinion. Well, I gave one :) Is that OK.
Rod 01-Aug-2008 21:57
Nicely done Brent this does work well.
